3 out of 5 stars Nice but not a must have...   July 31, 2010

This is a neat little thing if you have a GPS application on your iPhone (3G or 3GS, might not fit iPhone 4).
The sound amplification capabilities are a little overrated but some amplification is achieved. As pointed out by others, the fit is important so it might not work if you have heavy protection (big covers for the iPhone).

Pros:
1. The antiskid mat is rock steady and doesn't slip at all.
2. Sound amplification works if you fit it properly

Cons:
1. The neck that snaps the the cradle to the stand is weak and the iPhone jiggles/shakes at high speed. That make reading the screen a little difficult.

I use it with the MapQuest mapping app that has recently introduced voice guidance. It's free and pretty nifty. I won't replace a real GPS but with iOS 4 it warns you of upcoming exits/turns even when the screen is off.

Overall this attachment is not a must have, but useful if you have a GPS app on your iPhone 3 or 3GS

4 out of 5 stars Great 2-in-1 Surprise! Not just for car use.   July 29, 2010

The lack of photos for this product really does it a disservice. Although I prefer the idea of a suction cup windshield mount, I chose the dashboard mount for quick, easy removal from sight when exiting the car and to avoid messy fingerprints on the windshield. In the one available product photo, it looks like the entire mount is a single stand-like unit, but in fact it's two separate pieces: a heavy, friction-bottomed base that sits on the dashboard, and a typical suction cup-style windshield mount that suctions on to a smooth plastic disc in the center of the base. This makes the cradle usable in many scenarios (see below).

iPHONE 4 AUDIO: I bought this product to use with my iPhone 4G, even though the description doesn't mention 4G support. The spring-loaded clamps hold the phone very securely and most likely only a serious car crash or massive pot hole would jar it loose. Unfortunately, I wanted the cradle's sound amplification feature so I could hear louder GPS direction announcements while listening to music from a different source, and none of the included rubber gaskets are for a 4G phone. Again, it only claims to work with 3GS and earlier models, but I was hoping I still might be able to hear some sound amplification. Sadly I don't, though I'm not sure how much I would hear even when using a supported phone. Using the rubber gaskets for the 3GS model (the ones that fit the 4G most closely) and pressing the 4G speakers hard against them so that they seal properly over the holes produces no volume increase whatsoever, not even slightly, so I tend to question how well this would work with the correct phone and gaskets. But clearly following the guidelines might make all the difference.

iPHONE 4 VIDEO: The fact that this is a two-piece unit is wonderful news for iPhone 4 users! When in the cradle, both of the iPhone 4's cameras have unobstructed views, so this mount can also be used as a reliable tripod! Using the dashboard mount on a desk or table turns the phone into a hands-free video chat camera, or allows you to easily pose for your own photos or videos using the front-facing camera. Use either mount in the car to record a video of your journey, or suction it on to a window in a room to record party antics, your kids playing, whatever!

While it would be nice to be able to use the sound amplification feature (hopefully functioning 4G rubber pads will soon be available separately???), I'm still very happy with this mount on its own. Easy to use and highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Just what I wanted   July 1, 2010

I sent for the Kensington dashboard mount after realizing I needed to hold my I-phone when using my navigational app. It really is quite exactly what I needed. There were no directions so I don't know what to do with the little rubber pieces but I don't seem to need them. I also don't understand what or how it is amplifying as the sound is the same with or without the stand. My only complaint is that sometimes the plug must not be making full contact as the power may dwindle even when the phone is plugged in. I have to make sure the wire is properly placed and that doesn't always work out.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the $...   June 13, 2010

Considering how much a factory installed GPS or a TomTom costs this is a good option for any iphone carrier that uses the GPS function frequently. I have only a few concerns for certain individuals:

The first is if the dashboard does not have a sunken tray (like my XTerra has) then I'm not sure how this would sit. My wife's Lexus has quite a slant on the dash and I don't know how steady it would be. Although it is a lot heavier than it looks.

If you leave the iphone in the mount for too long and you live in a warm climate like I do then the heat will shut it down and it takes a decent amount of time to cool off (by decent amount I mean in relative terms because if you are on a route that has many turns you cannot afford to lose the function of the GPS for too long).

Other than that I like this thing for $20.

4 out of 5 stars Nice cradle for iPhone   May 28, 2010

I really like my Kensington Dashboard Friction Mount with the Sound Amplified Cradle for the iPhone. It stays on the dashboard in an easily accessible position. One drawback is that it sometimes seems to interfere with my line of sight but that may just take getting used to it. The other drawback is that on hot sunny days the temperature prevents me from using it on the dashboard. Otherwise it is wonderful!
